Snoring can be caused by many different things. Some can be as simple as the position you sleep in and others can be a serious medical condition. Get evaluated by your doctor, but keep reading the suggestions here to see if you can find a tactic that will give you a better nights sleep.
Many people find that breathing strips are an effective and fairly affordable means of cutting down on the snoring. However, some people have expressed problems with preventing the strips from falling off during the night. Before applying the strip, use an alcohol-based toner to swab the nose and surrounding area. This will allow the adhesive strips to firmly grip the skin all night long.
Take care of your allergies to alleviate snoring. Many times, snoring is caused by an allergy to dust mites, pet fur, or other allergen. The allergy can cause your nasal and throat passages to swell, leading to a rattling snore. Taking an over the counter medication can help, or see your doctor to find the best treatment.
Drink lots of water in order to not snore. When dehydrated, your airways will become parched, making it more difficult for air to flow through. To minimize the risk of snoring, you should try to drink at least 10 cups of hydrating liquid (anything non-caffeinated, ideally water) in the course of the day.
Lose weight. Obesity, or even carrying around just a few excess pounds, can have many adverse health effects. One of these effects is an increased tendency to snore. The heavier you are, the more likely your airway is to become restricted by excess fat and flesh. Drop the pounds to alleviate the problem.
Stay away from all milk products before going to bed. Most dairy products cause mucus buildup in your throat, which in turn, causes snoring. If you are a big dairy fan, do not consume it past dinnertime. Also, if you want to have a drink before bedtime, stick to water or tea.
Don’t drink alcoholic beverages before going to bed. The very reason you might be tempted to have a nighttime drink, the fact that you want to relax, can cause you to snore. When your muscles relax because of the alcohol, so do your air passages. As your air passages become restricted, you snore.
A good way to prevent your from sleeping on your back, which can make snoring worse, is to sew something on the back of your shirt that will be uncomfortable if you roll over on it. This will make you less likely to ever sleep in a position where you are on your back.
Losing weight will often reduce your snoring. Having excess fat around the neck will put an increase of pressure on the airways. This can cause a slight collapse of your airways during the middle of your sleep. The loss of even a few pounds of this extra pressure could make a huge difference.
Try out anything here that you think will give you a shot at getting better sleep. Anything is worth a try right? As we stated at the beginning, some snoring is caused by a medical issue. So if you don’t already know what is causing your snoring, you should see your doctor and eliminate that first.
